Natural Ways to Help Lower Fever During Pregnancy

​During the 16th week of my pregnancy, I woke up at 1am with a fever.

 

A quick google search of "fever during pregnancy" and "natural ways to reduce fever during pregnancy" can easily bring up articles that offer helpful information, but they also share somewhat scary information not entirely helpful for an emotional, pregnant woman to read in the middle of the night.

 

Many of the articles I read shared details of the different causes of fever during pregnancy and what symptoms may accompany a fever depending on the cause. It is always recommended to contact your doctor or midwife immediately when you develop a fever during pregnancy because of the developmental concerns a prolonged fever can bring. 

 

For me, since my only symptoms were a slight sore throat and an achy body along with my fever, my husband and I decided it should be safe for us to wait until morning to call our midwife and my mom, our birth doula.

 

In the past my go to essential oil for helping reduce fever was peppermint, but since it can cause miscarriage if used in high amounts I was a little concerned about using it too much. 

 

We read several articles that shared pregnancy-safe ways to help reduce a fever at home and my fever was gone in less than 24 hours.

 

Between 1am-3am, and throughout the next day this is what we did:

 

  • Water - I drank as much as I possibly could to help with my dry, sore throat and the feeling of dehydration. Staying hydrated is extremely important!
     

  • Garlic and Olive Oil - Garlic has anti-bacterial properties, which helps to kill bacteria and draw out infection. Olive oil acts as a soothing agent and helps to ease an aching body. 

    My husband minced 2 cloves of garlic, mixed it with a bit of olive oil, then rubbed it onto bottom of my feet and wrapped them with plastic wrap. One website we found said to let it sit for an hour, then rinse with cool water, while another site recommended sleeping with it on your feet all night (that is what I did). 

    (Word of advice: If you've consumed a lot of water, you may want to be sure and use the restroom before wrapping your feet so you don't have to be carried to the toilet ;)

     

  • Tylenol - Tylenol is generally considered safe by doctors during pregnancy, so I felt I didn't need to have a consultation before taking it. Since I've only taken Tylenol a couple times throughout my life, I didn't want to take the normal dose of 2 capsules every 4-6 hours, so I only took 1 capsule.
     

  • Cold Compress - We left a damp, cool washcloth on my forehead all night while I slept to help lower my body temperature overall. 
     

  • Blueberries - Since they contain a natural aspirin, they help curb fever and diarrhea. Frozen blueberries can be even better as freezing them helps to maintain the nutrients of the fresh berries! 
     

  • Green Tea and Collagen with Lemon Essential Oil - Green tea has natural anti-oxidant and antibiotic properties which help in lowering fevers. I added a scoop of Collagen to help make sure my body was still getting protein even though I couldn't eat normally yet (if you're not familiar with it, I'd highly recommend learning more and adding it to your diet on a regular basis). I also added a drop of lemon essential oil since lemon is a natural detoxification agent and helps flush toxins out of the body. It also is a germicide and kills germs.

 

The first time I took my temperature orally it was 100.8°F 

 

After about an hour after using the garlic and olive oil, Tylenol, Cold Compress and Blueberries, my temperature had dropped to 99.5°F.

 

The next morning at 8am my temp was 101.1°F (probably because I was still wrapped up in blankets) and at 8:45am it was 99.6°F. By 11am it dropped to 99.1°F. Throughout the day my temperature went up and down, and I didn't have any other symptoms develop so after calling our birth center, we decided it would be safe to continue working to lower my fever from home without going to the doctor. My fever was gone completely in less than 24 hours by continuing to do these natural remedies throughout the day and resting a lot.

I hope these tips are helpful to any pregnant moms out there, and if you have experienced fever during pregnancy, I'd love to hear how you handled it as well!

 

Again, remember it is always recommended to contact your doctor or midwife when you develop a fever during pregnancy, but hopefully these natural options are a helpful alternative to you as well as the advice of your care providers.
